Undocumented detainees hail from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, Pakistan

KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 106 undocumented migrants have been arrested by the Immigration Department in an operation at Seri Cempaka Apartment, Rawang, at about 12.30am today.

Deputy director-general (operations) Jafri Embok Taha said in a statement that the detainees are aged between 6 months and 49 years – originating from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

A total of 468 people were inspected – among them were 300 foreigners, including 174 men, 79 women, and 47 children (27 boys and 20 girls), while the rest were locals.

Jafri said a total of 309 personnel were involved in the operation, but they faced challenges in entering the housing area as their vehicles were blocked by disorganised parking.

The housing area consists of eight five-storey low-cost apartments, with 80 to 100 units per block.

The raid was conducted following public complaints that undocumented migrants are living in the housing area, he said.

Among the offences not possessing identification documents, overstaying, and others that violated the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, and Immigration Regulations 1963.

All the detainees have been sent to the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot here for further investigation.

Also involved in the operation were 12 officers from the National Registration Department and 10 personnel from the Civil Defence Force. – January 6, 2024
