Three Johor schools to close tomorrow due to worsening floods

However, state education official says no SPM or STPM candidates affected so far

11:04 PM MYT

JOHOR BAHRU –  Three schools in this district will be closed starting tomorrow due to floods.

State Education, Information and Communications Committee chairman Norlizah Noh was reported by Bernama announcing the affected schools SK Kg Maju Jaya, SK Bukit Mutiara and SK Sg Tiram.

More than 48,000 students in the state are set to take the SPM exam from today until March 7, while 8,831 students are set to sit for the STPM exam in the state from January 22 to February 6.

However, Norlilzah said so far, no SPM candidates have been affected by the floods.

Tonight, the number of flood victims in Johor surged in just over an hour to 3,322 people as of 8pm from 1,805 as of 7pm. The victims are now taking shelter at 45 temporary relief centres.

Six districts are affected by the floods, with Pontian being the latest. The other five are Kota Tinggi, Kluang, Segamat, Johor Bahru and Kulai.

Bernama also reported Johor Fire and Rescue Department director Siti Rohani Nadir as saying that continuous rain since last night had caused river water levels to rise.

“So far, the work of evacuating victims is being carried out actively in the Kota Tinggi district and several places in Johor Bahru and Machap.”

The number of victims is expected to increase further due to more rain, which has led to the water levels of major rivers in Johor such as Sg Kahang and Sg Johor to rise. – January 7, 2024
