IGP says police will take action once they identify someone with 60% likelihood of being involved

KUALA LUMPUR – Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has revealed that the police are actively collecting intelligence to arrest the murderer of 6-year-old autistic boy Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin. 

During a press conference held at the Bukit Aman police headquarters today, Razarudin said police will summon individuals deemed potential suspects in the ongoing investigation. 

“We are diligently gathering intelligence on this case. Once we identify an individual with over 60% likelihood of being a suspect, we will take action,” Razarudin said. 

He said extensive investigations have been conducted in the immediate vicinity and surrounding areas of the crime scene. 

However, progress has reached a standstill, prompting the police to seek assistance from the public. 

“We urge the public to share any recent information they may have with us,” he said, cautioning against spreading misinformation for personal gain. 

Razarudin mentioned the possibility of recalling previous witnesses, including family members, to aid in the ongoing investigation based on the gathered intelligence. 

However, he affirmed that the police have concluded 90% of their investigation into the murder. 

Asked about the challenges faced in the investigation, Razarudin highlighted the difficulty in determining the motive behind the murder. 

“Murder cases with motives like jealousy or gang fights have identifiable targets. (Zayn) Rayyan was 6 years old, with no enemies – only autism,” he explained.  

“Without a clear motive, our investigation encompasses a holistic approach.” 

On December 5, Zayn Rayyan was reported missing, and his body was discovered the following day near a river, approximately 200m from his residence. 

The case was reclassified from sudden death to murder after a post-mortem revealed neck and body injuries, along with signs of defensive wounds. 

Reports indicated that the police sought assistance from Interpol. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that specific evidence was forwarded to Interpol for cross-verification with their database. 

Furthermore, evidence obtained from Zayn Rayyan’s body during the investigation was sent for further examination and detailing. – January 9, 2024
