National duty first: Zii Jia commits to Asia Team Championships, skips German Open

KUALA LUMPUR – Independent men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia is seizing every opportunity to serve his country by confirming his participation in the upcoming Asia Team Championships with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

On his social media account last night, Zii Jia expressed his willingness to forgo his participation at the Super 300 German Open, happening from February 27 to March 3.

The world number 11 shuttler emphasised the rarity of second chances and the honour of representing Malaysia in team events.

“Hence, we can confirm that Lee Zii Jia and Team LZJ, with honour, accept the invitation from (BAM) to serve for the upcoming Asia Team Championships. 

“When healthy and able, (we) will always heed the call of national duty.

“When the official call-up comes, some adjustments to prior programmes will be facilitated, including forgoing the German Open,” read the post.

On Tuesday, Zii Jia was shown the exit at the Malaysia Open by China’s Lu Guangzu, marking his second first-round exit in a row at the Super 1000 tournament. 

Expressing his frustration with his results, the 25-year-old Kedahan is determined to make a significant impact in the upcoming team event in Shah Alam from February 13 to 18, prioritising the unique experience of competing on home ground and hearing the cheers of the local crowd.
