KUALA LUMPUR – In a heartwarming display of sportsmanship, Indonesia’s women’s singles ace, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, is pleased that Goh Jin Wei has made a return to badminton after her off-court struggles.

Gregoria came up in the junior ranks, with Jin Wei being just a year younger.

Despite being foes on the court, Gregoria, who shares a junior history with Jin Wei, commended the Malaysian player’s determination and passion for the sport.

Jin Wei, who underwent colectomy surgery in 2019, retired in September 2021 due to her health struggles but made a return to badminton just four months later.

“I’m very pleased that she has returned to badminton; I like being on the BWF Tour with her. 

“Every player has their struggles, and I see that she has the desire and passion to continue competing in badminton. 

“Moving forward, I hope the both of us will continue to compete and push each other,” said the 2017 Junior World Champion.

Reflecting on their match at Axiata Arena yesterday, Gregoria said playing against a Malaysian on home turf can be a daunting experience.

Despite the crowd support for Jin Wei, Gregoria appreciated the experience.

“I have always liked playing in Malaysia because I too get a lot of support, like when I’m playing in Indonesia.”

The 23-year-old Jin Wei, a two-time junior world champion, put up a good fight in their match but ultimately succumbed to a straight sets defeat of 21-15, 24-22.

Gregoria also praised Jin Wei’s improved performance compared to their recent meeting at the Asian Games, where she defeated Jin Wei 21-6, 21-12. 

“She played really well, and that makes me happy because she is in better condition compared to before this. 

“I played well in the first game, but in the second, I made a lot of unforced errors, and that is something I need to fix in the next round,” said Gregoria.

In the quarterfinals tomorrow, Gregoria is set to face the reigning Olympic champion, Chen Yufei from China. – January 12, 2024
