Tze Yong has a muscle tear in his back, out of India Open

Shuttler suffered injury during first round match of Malaysia Open on Wednesday

5:30 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong is out of the India Open, starting next Tuesday, after suffering a muscle tear during the first round of the Malaysia Open on Wednesday.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh confirmed this after Tze Yong’s medical examination.

“The medical examination revealed that Tze Yong had suffered a muscle tear in his back.

“With that, the coaching staff has decided to withdraw his participation in the India Open, his condition will be monitored and a decision will be made soon if he will take part in the Indonesian Masters at the end of the month,” he said.

Tze Yong had gone up for a smash in his first-round match against Japan’s Koki Watanabe and immediately looked to be in discomfort.

He asked for medical assistance but later decided to withdraw after the pain seemed to be too much to bear.

Yesterday, national men’s singles coach Datuk Tey Seu Bock said the 23-year-old had undergone a scan after his match against Watanabe but the doctor could not provide a diagnosis.

Tze Yong was supposed to have a doctor’s appointment yesterday but that was cancelled and rescheduled to today. – January 12, 2024
