Malaysia Open: Weikeng-Chang turn tables on Indian duo to clinch men’s doubles

China’s world number ones conjure their own comeback to beat Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty

8:07 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – China’s men’s doubles duo, Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang, orchestrated a stunning comeback to snatch victory from India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty at the Malaysia Open today.

Despite trailing 10-3 in the rubber set, last year’s losing finalists secured their second Super 1000 title, triumphing 9-21, 21-18, 21-17 at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

The world number one pair credited their inspiration to the second-ranked Indian duo’s impressive comeback against South Korea’s Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae in the preceding match.

“When we played them in the second round of the All England last year, we were trailing too and had to stage a comeback to win.

“We saw them play yesterday against Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae, and their comeback inspired us today. We thought if they can do it, we can too,” said the 23-year-old Weikeng.

This victory marks the Chinese pair’s second Super 1000 title after their success at the China Open last year. – January 14, 2024
