PUTRAJAYA – The Human Resources Ministry is set to unveil a new policy framework on Labour Day (May 1), aimed at addressing the comprehensive development of the nation’s workforce.

Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong announced that this policy would act as a guiding compass, providing direction for all future government initiatives and efforts related to workforce development.

Speaking during the minister’s New Year Address 2024 and the ministry’s monthly assembly this morning, Sim emphasised the fundamental need for the ministry to craft a new, comprehensive human resources policy.

“The policy must encompass various aspects, addressing specific labor issues and the general labor market. It should take into consideration digital technology development, the national agenda, job mismatch, the need for decent work, training, gift economy, gig economy, green economy, wages and salaries, and internships,” the Bukit Mertajam MP said.

Sim highlighted that upcoming government programmes related to human resources would be guided by this new policy.

He also announced that the ministry would conduct a review of the minimum wage this year, emphasising its alignment with Madani Economic Goals for the next decade, specifically aiming to increase worker salaries.

Expressing gratitude to the ministry’s members for their warm welcome since his appointment as minister in December last year, Sim acknowledged his status as a newcomer.

“In my visit to various departments and agencies, I was a newcomer to you all. As a newcomer, I kindly request guidance and directions from all of you.”

He emphasised that the strength of the ministry would only be recognised through unity and harmony among its members. – January 16, 2024
