MACC summons former PM’s son over high-value assets

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today summoned the son of a former prime minister to record his statement over his high-valued assets.

The man’s name was mentioned in previously leaked documents on wealth owned by the world’s elite, a source with MACC told Scoop.

The individual was questioned for several hours this morning at the anti-graft agency’s headquarters in Putrajaya.

The source did not reveal further information regarding the investigation and Scoop is withholding the individual’s name.

Last year, it was reported that the son of a former prime minister had been called in by the MACC to assist investigations into his business activities.

Several leaked documents in a database on offshore wealth published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) contain the names of the world’s elite, including political leaders, and the offshore companies, shadow bank accounts, private jets, yachts, mansions, and artworks they own.

The documents also revealed the financial secrets of 35 world leaders, both former and current, while 330 politicians were mentioned including officials from 91 nations.

Several Malaysian leaders, including politicians, have been mentioned in these documents. 

The ICIJ cautions that there are legitimate uses for offshore companies and trusts, and that a person’s or company’s name in the leaked documents does not necessarily mean they have committed an offence. – January 18, 2024
