India Open: Aaron-Wooi Yik make the semis

The world number four pair are the only remaining Malaysians left in the tournament

10:46 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik advanced into the semifinals of the India Open after winning their quarterfinal match today.

Going into the match against Liu Yuchen-Ou Xuanyi, the world number four pair had an inferior 4-2 record against their Chinese rivals.

However, the 2022 world champions triumphed convincingly with straight sets 21-19, 21-19 in 45 minutes at the K.D. Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi.

Yesterday, they faced little resistance from Japanese pair Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura in the second round before beating them 21-10, 21-14 in just 31 minutes.

This is Aaron and Wooi Yik’s first semifinal appearance of the year.

Last week, they managed to get to the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open, but could not continue after losing to reigning world champions Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae from South Korea 16-21, 21-18, 21-13 at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

Aaron and Wooi Yik are the only representatives from Malaysia left in the Super 750 tournament.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists will face either Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark, or India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in the semifinals tomorrow. – January 19, 2024
