HKL assures medical equipment monitored, maintained after faulty ventilator reports

This after reports of patient’s death, and another brain dead, at hospital in Klang Valley due to ventilator failure

5:14 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) has confirmed that it is investigating a reported incident in which patients allegedly died due to ventilator failures.

In a statement today, Datin Paduka Dr Rohana Johan, the director of HKL, expressed that the hospital’s management, with its concession company, strives to ensure the vigilant monitoring and maintenance of medical equipment used in patient treatment.

“Any complications in medical treatment that may impact patient safety will be thoroughly investigated through the incident report system, as outlined in the Health Ministry’s guidelines for incident reports,” she added.

Yesterday, Free Malaysia Today reported that, within a week, one patient died and another was declared brain dead in two separate wards at a Klang Valley hospital due to ventilator failures.

While the report did not specify the details of the concerned hospital at that time, sources were quoted as saying that an internal investigation had been initiated to identify the cause of the ventilator failures.

Further, another source also claimed that there were two more cases linked to alleged ventilator failures, with one patient supposedly revived after the medical team performed CPR, while the condition of the other patient remains unconfirmed.

Later, Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan, the Health Ministry director-general, told the New Straits Times that, although the ministry had not yet received any official reports on such cases in Malaysia, it was actively investigating and seeking more information on the matter. – January 28, 2024
