KUALA LUMPUR – Petronas has set the record straight regarding the potential comeback of the Formula One (F1) Grand Prix at Sepang in 2026. 

In a statement released today, the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) naming rights holder provided a clear and definitive stance on the matter. 

“Petronas refers to the news reports published on January 31 on the potential return of the Formula One Grand Prix to Sepang, Malaysia, in 2026.  

“We would like to confirm that there have been no discussions on bringing the sport back to the Petronas Sepang International Circuit,” read the brief statement. 

Earlier, the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) also took a stand to dispel speculations surrounding the potential return of F1 races in Malaysia. 

SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif told Scoop that SIC neither initiated discussions with F1 nor entered into any agreements to revive the prestigious race. 

Both Petronas and SIC responded to a Reuters report citing sources indicating the former’s intentions to bring back the race, last held in 2017, for fervent racing enthusiasts in Malaysia. – January 31, 2024
