Water supply for 120,000 Penang consumers back to normal

PBAPP says pipe repair works at Sg Perai were completed 24 hours ahead of schedule

6:47 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The water supply for 120,000 consumers affected by pipe repair works has been fully restored.

Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer, K. Pathmanathan said work to repair leaks in the pipeline at Sg Perai was completed 24 hours ahead of schedule.

“The two new 600mm pipelines, connected along the Ampang Jajar Bridge that runs across Sg Perai, are functioning as expected.

“PBAPP is pumping water from the Sg Dua Water Treatment Plant to Penang Island at optimal levels,” he said in a statement this afternoon.

Pathmanathan urged consumers who still have water supply disruptions or low pressure to first check with their building management to see if there are “in-house” issues, or to contact PBAPP’s  24-hour call centre at 04-2558255 to lodge a report.

The water cut was announced for Monday due to repair works but was postponed to Tuesday night to allow consumers to store more water.

The unscheduled disruption was due to a major leak on January 23 in the underwater pipeline in Sg Perai, which also suffered a leak in December.

PBAPP said water supply was fully restored today around 3pm. The original deadline for full recover was 3.30pm tomorrow. – February 1, 2024
