MACC nabs Selangor civil servant suspected of taking RM16,000 in bribes

Woman in her 40s alleged to have sought kickbacks for land division approvals

11:33 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – A woman was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly receiving RM16,000 as bribes for approving applications to divide land parcels in Selangor.

The suspect is a civil servant in her 40s and had committed the alleged offence at a land and district office in the state.

Selangor MACC director Datuk Alias Salim confirmed the arrest.

She was detained at about 3pm yesterday at the Kuala Selangor MACC office after being called in for her statement.

The suspect is believed to have asked for and received bribes from three landowners around the district who wanted to apply for approval for land division.

Early investigations have found that the suspect had sought and received monetary bribes of about RM16,000 that were deposited into her personal bank account in 2022.

Alias said that the case was being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.

The MACC obtained a four-day remand order, from today until February 10, from magistrate Siti Hajar Ali at the Kuala Selangor magistrates’ court, this morning.

The suspect was represented by counsel Jeanne Francis from the National Legal Aid Foundation. – February 7, 2024
