Minister says he and his officers will cooperate with the authorities and pay a compound if necessary

9:28 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming has clarified that his official car was not intentionally tailgating an ambulance on February 3, contrary to what the public claimed.

He said his driver noticed a private ambulance behind his car heading to an accident site near Ipoh.

“The driver gave way to the ambulance to pass. Seeing that it was a massive traffic jam due to the accident, my driver was forced to follow the ambulance for a short while to find an opening to continue our journey to Ipoh.”

Nga said in a statement that he was on his way to an official event in Ipoh when the seven-vehicle pile-up took place along the PLUS Highway.

“I never intended to break the law and would always give priority to rescue efforts according to the law. I have instructed my officers to give their full cooperation to the authorities and be ready to pay the compound if my driver is found guilty.”

Yesterday, MCA Youth called on Transport Minister Anthony Loke to disclose the identity of the minister, whose official vehicle was tailgating an ambulance in Perak recently.

The wing’s deputy chief, Mike Chong Yew Chuan, also urged the ministry to suspend the driving licences of the errant minister and their driver.

On February 3, a car with the word ‘Menteri’ above its licence plate was caught on camera tailgating an ambulance in an apparent attempt to avoid the traffic jam that built up from an accident on the North-South Expressway between Simpang Pulai and Tapah in Perak.

The incident sparked public outrage after video and photos of the incident went viral on social media. – February 7, 2024
