Political stability crucial for economic growth, wooing investors: PM

Malaysia eyes stronger ties with China as key trading partner

2:53 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Madani government’s provision of political stability is the driving force behind the country’s continued economic development and boosts foreign investment, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The prime minister said that this year is earmarked as a year for the government to focus on economic development, aiming to restore Malaysia’s regional standing.

“In 2024, with a secure political environment and a robust government, our primary focus should be on economic development, attracting investments, and enhancing our capabilities across various sectors, particularly education and health.

“The cabinet has been directed to ensure a concentrated effort in re-establishing Malaysia as a prominent nation in the region,” he said during the Chinese New Year open house organised by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) today.

Also present were Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Science and Technology Minister Chang Lih Kang, KLSCAH president Ngan Teng Ye, and Chinese ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.

Anwar emphasised the significance of Malaysia’s peace and diverse cultural landscape, with multilingual capabilities, as essential for attracting foreign investors.

“As we shift our focus to economic development, China stands out as one of our primary trading partners, investing in and expanding economic initiatives. Concurrently, we are fostering the growth of university education and research cultures,” Anwar said.

“I’ve recently received a response from President Xi Jinping, expressing a commitment to enhancing strategic cooperation between our two countries. China has consistently maintained a strong relationship with us, and we value their dedication to improving bilateral relations with Malaysia.”

The prime minister also expressed gratitude to KLSCAH for its continuous support in the government’s fight against corruption.

“As I have reiterated, corruption poses a significant threat to our nation, and cleaning it up is imperative for us to emerge as a key player in economic growth and national development,” Anwar said. – February 10, 2024
