KUALA LUMPUR – Police are tracking down the driver of a Mitsubishi Lancer suspected of smashing another vehicle’s windscreen at KM139.6 of the North-South Expressway northbound yesterday.

Johor police chief M. Kumar said police received a report of the incident at 2.36pm, yesterday, following a 54-second viral video clip of the incident.

“Early investigations revealed that the incident was caused by the victim’s action of obstructing the suspect’s vehicle while passing through the emergency lane.

“This caused the suspect, believed to be a foreigner, to feel dissatisfied before he exited the vehicle and smashed the victim’s rear window,” he said in a statement.

According to Kumar, a Facebook user going by the name Apple Kenzo shared a 54-second video showing the recorded incident.

At the time of writing, the clip had garnered 2,300 likes, 694 comments, 3,000 shares, and 26,000 views from social media users.

The case is classified and investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment for not less than a year and not more than five years or a fine or both, Kumar added.

“The investigation is also being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with the case still at the investigation stage.”

“Police advise the public not to speculate, which could jeopardise the investigation. The public are also advised to be wise and considerate road users to ensure traffic safety,” he said.

Earlier, the incident went viral on social media and was reported to have occurred during heavy traffic on the highway during Chinese New Year, involving a foreign man driving a Mitsubishi Lancer and a local driver of a Toyota Innova.

However, road users at the scene were able to diffuse the incident.

Meanwhile, Muar police chief Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz, in a statement yesterday, confirmed the incident, adding that police had received a report regarding the matter.

“So far, one police report has been lodged at the Pagoh police station regarding the incident.

“Police will issue a media statement once complete information is obtained,” he said. – February 11, 2024
