PEDi rebranding set to broaden reach, enhance public access to services: Fahmi

Communications Ministry to collaborate with Information Dept, Rukun Tetangga to widen accessibility of Digital Economy Centres

KUALA LUMPUR – The Communications Ministry will have discussions with the Information Department and the respective Rukun Tetangga to expand the reach of the Digital Economy Centres (PEDi) as part of its rebranding exercise.

Minister Fahmi Fadzil said there is only one PEDi for each state constituency (DUN), with limited capacity as some areas have a higher population density.

“Last February, the prime minister asked for ‘1 DUN, 1 PEDi’ but some of the constituencies are huge, so we want to ensure that more people benefit from this.

“NGOs could also benefit from the PEDi facilities, but we will look into this first and let MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) decide. Then, an announcement will be made,” he told reporters after launching an event in his Lembah Pantai parliamentary constituency.

He also reiterated that the rebranding of PEDi is due to its expanded role that does not just involve the digital economy, based on his observations and feedback from others.

“PEDi are frequented by the public to get information about grants, assistance and services provided by the government. So, there is a need to improve PEDi. It’s not just a name change, but added functions.”

Yesterday, Fahmi said PEDi would be rebranded in the second quarter of this year to expand its functions for the people.

There are 911 PEDi nationwide. – February 17, 2024
