KUALA LUMPUR – In a bid to address the pressing issue of social security for veteran artists, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has initiated discussions with Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, following alarming cases of artists facing financial hardships post-retirement.

The plight of renowned pianist Ross Ariffin, who experienced homelessness for three years, and the widow of the late actor Pak Jabit, living in poverty, prompted the ministers to engage in a special discussion on the matter today.

Expressing concern over the lack of a social safety net for the country’s artists after they retire, Fahmi highlighted the need for urgent measures to provide financial support to those who have dedicated their lives to the arts.

“There are many among the nation’s artists who have no social safety net after they retire,” he said on Facebook.

“The Communications Ministry is actively seeking viable solutions to establish a comprehensive social safety net that would cover part-time media practitioners, film crews, music crews and behind-the-scenes production crews.”

In a proactive move, the government is set to launch an awareness campaign aimed at emphasising the importance of contributing to the Social Security Organisation, through the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme. 

The campaign aims to educate artists about the benefits of participating in the scheme and securing their financial future, he indicated.

The proposed initiative reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the financial challenges faced by retired artists and underscores the importance of recognising their contributions to the nation’s cultural landscape. – February 20, 2024
