Tze Yong to undergo back surgery, will skip French Open, All England

Shuttler will be sidelined for a period of two to six weeks to undergo the necessary procedure

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong will undergo a minor surgery to address his ongoing back issues, as announced by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in a statement released today.

Following a consultation with the medical team, it has been determined that the 23-year-old will be temporarily sidelined for a period of two to six weeks to undergo the necessary procedure.

“Tze Yong is set to miss the All England and the French Open next month as he continues treatment for a back injury sustained during the Badminton Asia Team Championships last week.

“In consultation with the medical team, the Johorian has agreed to prioritise his recovery and will undergo surgery on his back next week,” read the statement.

Expressing the association’s commitment to prioritising player welfare, BAM national coaching director Rexy Mainaky emphasised the importance of Tze Yong’s recovery.

“BAM’s priority has and always will be our players. Our focus is on Tze Yong’s treatment and recovery process.

“Once he has recovered, we will discuss the next course of action. For now, we want him to concentrate on treating and overcoming this injury,” said Rexy.

Earlier today, BAM president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria reiterated the organisation’s dedication to the health and well-being of its athletes.

Stressing that Tze Yong’s readiness for the competition takes precedence, Norza affirmed that BAM will not rush the athlete’s return to the court until he is fully recovered.

Looking ahead, BAM remains hopeful for the shuttler’s swift recovery, aiming for his potential return to competitive action at the Spain Masters in Madrid, scheduled from March 26 to 31, followed by the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China, slated for April 9-14. – February 24, 2024
