Double whammy in court: middle-aged Singaporean man caught entering M’sia illegally to seek jobs

Authorities say he hid himself in a car boot after paying two M’sian women SG$3,000 to facilitate his illegal entry

KUALA LUMPUR – A Singapore permanent resident in his 50s had to face the music twice when he was caught entering Malaysia illegally last December.

Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said yesterday that the man had tried to enter Malaysia illegally on December 13 by hiding in a car boot after allegedly paying two Malaysian women SG$3,000 (RM10,530).

He was caught at Johor’s Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex by officers conducting routine inspections of imported goods.

He reportedly told the authorities that he was going to Malaysia to get a job. He ended up spending two months in jail and paying a compound in Malaysia.

When repatriated, he was brought to a Singapore court to be prosecuted on February 27 for leaving the country illegally.

ICA told Today Online that it is common practice to focus on checking arriving vehicles while conducting random checks on departing vehicles. – March 8, 2024
