Junior men’s doubles pair reached finals two tournaments in a row this year, securing first 2024 title in Haarlem after defeating China

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s junior men’s doubles duo, Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing aspire to excel by clinching titles in junior competitions and carrying their success seamlessly into senior-level tournaments. 

Aaron, the world number one junior men’s doubles player – alongside Khai Xing who is ranked second globally, had an impressive campaign in Europe last week. 

They successfully reached the finals in two consecutive tournaments, beginning with the Dutch International Junior Championship in Haarlem on February 28, followed by the German Junior Championship in Berlin, which concluded on Sunday. 

In Haarlem, Aaron and Khai Xing secured their first title of the year, defeating Chinese pair Hu Ke Yuan-Li Xiang Yi in straight sets, 21-18, 21-19, in the final. 

However, their hopes of winning a second title in Berlin were dashed when they lost to another Chinese pair, Cheng Yong Rui-Chen Zhe Han 22-20, 21-16. 

Their commendable performance in these tournaments is underscored by their earlier achievements in senior-level competitions this year, notably reaching the semi-finals of the Sri Lanka International Challenge and the quarter-finals of the Sri Lanka International Series.

Reflecting on their progress, Aaron acknowledged the pivotal role of national top men’s doubles player, Aaron Chia, in guiding their development on the court. 

“In these two tournaments, we’ve seen improvements in our performance. While our strength and tactical play are sufficient, our stamina remains a focal point for us. 

“For me, we are ready to compete in senior tournaments. In the upcoming matches, mental strength will be the determining factor for success.  

“I often receive advice from my senior, Aaron (Chia), who always emphasised not to overthink on the court, focus on the game, and stay humble,” the 18-year-old Aaron told Scoop. 

As they approach the twilight of their junior careers, Aaron and Khai Xing harbour lofty aspirations of clinching the prestigious junior world champion title ahead of the tournament in Nanchang, China, in October. 

The last time the nation’s junior men’s doubles player emerged as world champions was through Teo Ee Yi-Nelson Heng in the 2011 edition in Taoyuan, Chinese Taipei. – March 12, 2024
