KUALA LUMPUR – A DAP leader has lambasted Bersatu leader Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan for spreading misleading information about the ringgit on social media.

“Wan Saiful must promptly retract his statement and issue a formal public apology without delay,” said Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng in a statement.

“The seriousness of his action cannot be overstated – it has become evident to the public that both he and his political party have engaged in deceitful tactics with the malicious intent of undermining the nation’s economy,” the Kepong MP said.

His response followed Wan Saiful’s Facebook post yesterday, which included a screenshot of Google data showing that the ringgit had reached RM4.98 against the US dollar, cynically captioning: “A sign of a strengthening economy”.

Earlier today, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) refuted Google’s data yesterday, saying it was inaccurate and that the ringgit traded around RM4.70 to the US dollar on March 15.

According to BNM, it was the second time Google had published inaccurate ringgit exchange data. The first incident was on February 6.

Lim said that the Tasek Gelugor MP must be held accountable for his actions.

“It is imperative that Wan Saiful be held accountable for his actions. The gravity of the matter necessitates swift and decisive consequences to uphold the integrity of our democratic principles and restore trust among the populace,” he added.

Just moments after BNM issued the statement, Wan Saiful posted on Facebook again, saying: “Good explanation, Bank Negara Malaysia. Congratulations on the swift response.” – March 16, 2024
