Ex-Miros DG pleads guilty, fined RM12,000 for falsifying documents

Datuk Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim was sentenced to a fine in lieu of four months in jail for each of his four charges

KUALA LUMPUR – Former director-general of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros), Datuk Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim, was sentenced today to a RM12,000 fine in lieu of four month’s jail for each of four charges of falsifying documents.

Shah Alam sessions court judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud handed down the sentence today after Khairil Anwar, 48, pleaded guilty to alternative charges.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Fadhly Mohd Zamry offered four alternative charges under Section 471 of the Penal Code on dishonestly using forged documents as genuine.

The original charges brought against Khairil Anwar on October 16 last year were under Section 468, on forgery for the purpose of cheating.

The ex-Miros head had claimed trial for those charges at the time. The penalties under Section 468 were imprisonment for up to seven years and a fine, if convicted.

He was charged with forging tender documents from four companies while he held the post.

The documents were for the supply of 16 cars from Thailand to the Miros Crash Test Laboratory in Bukit Katil, Ayer Keroh, Melaka.

The offence was allegedly committed at a premises in Taman Kajang Sentral, Kajang, near here on July 24, 2017.
