‘Allah’-printed socks: commotions at some KK Marts amid calls to boycott chain

Clips of people upset with convenience store company make rounds on social media

6:40 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Since the controversy erupted over the sale of “Allah”-printed socks in KK Super Mart, the convenience store chain has been receiving direct threats from the public who are upset about the insensitivity of the matter.

The latest incident involves a one-minute-and-32-second video clip showing several men confronting a KK Mart staff member at an outlet in Batu Pahat, Johor.

In the video, which has been making the rounds on social media, one of the men is seen talking to someone on the phone, believed to be the store’s manager.

“Inform your boss about the seriousness of this issue. It is an important matter. You are a Muslim, and I am a Muslim too.

“We don’t want this issue to continue; otherwise, we will need to come here (to KK Mart) every day,” he said.

The employee in the store explained to the group that the offending socks were only found in Kuala Lumpur and not in Batu Pahat.

One of the men in the video clip responded that they were aware, but wanted to make sure there was no sale of such socks in the Johor district.

Scoop has reached out to KK Mart’s management for comments on the matter; however, it has not responded as of press time.

Another viral clip has surfaced depicting a man holding a sign with the words “KK Mart Biadab! Boikot!” (Barbarous KK Mart! Boycott!) in front of an outlet in Muar.

In the 25-second clip, the man, dressed in black, is seen covering his face with a red-and-white keffiyeh while holding a black flag adorned with white Arabic script in his other hand.

Some X users have expressed their disappointment regarding the individual’s call to boycott the convenience store chain.

Another user, @aexzell4, asked: “the issue (about “Allah”-printed socks) has settled down; why are they still harping on it?”

Meanwhile, other users alleged that the person in the video received remuneration to create a commotion.

“He probably got paid? To stir things up or as a distraction for something bigger,” said user @bebeblush.

Another user, @mwyusof, asked: “How much are you getting to do something like that?” in the comments section.

Earlier, KK Group of Companies founder and group executive chairman Datuk Seri K.K. Chai and seven others were called up for police questioning over the “Allah”-printed socks issue.

Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department (CID) said they had their statements taken today at 12.30pm.

The CID added that a total of 80 reports have been lodged with police over the socks as of noon today. – March 20, 2024
