‘Allah’-printed socks controversy: another charged for insulting Islam on Facebook

Chiok Wai Loong to face charges under Section 233 of Communications and Multimedia Act 1998

9:59 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Another person is to be charged with insulting Islam over the sale of socks with the word “Allah” printed on them at a KK Mart convenience store.

The man, identified as Chiok Wai Loong, was brought to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court (Cybercrimes) in Jalan Duta to face charges this morning.

He will be charged under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for posting offensive content on Facebook.

Yesterday, Sabahan Ricky Shane Cagampang, 33, pleaded guilty in Kota Kinabalu to a similar charge and was sentenced to six months’ jail and fined RM15,000 in default of four months’ jail.

Section 233 provides a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both, and a further fine of RM1,000 for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.

It was reported that Ricky Shane, from Tawau, is a Muslim convert who embraced Islam in 2021.

Meanwhile, Chiok, 35, was arrested in Cheras, in the capital, yesterday.

He has since deleted his allegedly offending post on the socks, but he was still found by a group of men who confronted him and made a video recording of his apology.

The video, posted to Chiok’s Facebook, shows the men surrounding him as he promises not to insult other religions again. – March 22, 2024
