KUALA LUMPUR – Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek’s aide has lodged a police report regarding threats against the minister following her comments on the use of the term “kafir” (infidel).

A copy of the report, which was filed by Fadhlina’s political secretary, Atiqah Shairah Shaharuddin, at the Kuching district police headquarters today, was shared by the minister on her Facebook page.

“(I received) hate speech, untruthful accusations, and even threats to my safety online,” Fadhlina said in the post.

“A police report has been made due to safety concerns. Based on advice from my legal team, all evidence from various online postings, comments, and direct messages is being collected, and legal action will be taken.

“Maybe there are some people doing this purposefully, while others are acting out of ignorance. Only God knows,” the minister added.

According to the police report, Atiqah claimed that she had received several images of Fadhlina through WhatsApp and Facebook.

The images were overlaid with the caption: “Kafir pun saya haramkan di rumah. Saya tidak ajar anak saya sebut Kafir” (I don’t even allow the word “kafir” at home. I don’t teach my children to say “kafir”).

The image, Atiqah asserted, was widely shared on Facebook by an account with the name of Muhammad Rifaat Razman and the JKKK Fan Club.

She also said that the video, which was supposedly taken out of context, has since been deleted on Facebook, but is still being circulated on other social media platforms.

This, Atiqah said, has caused Fadhlina to receive various negative reactions from netizens.

“I’m worried about (Fadhlina’s) safety as this issue could involve the 3Rs (race, religion, and royalty).

“This report is made to ensure that police are able to carry out subsequent action so that unwanted issues can be avoided,” she added in the report. – March 30, 2024
