KUALA LUMPUR – No Malaysians were reported to be affected by the earthquake striking Hualien in Taiwan’s east coastal area today, said Wisma Putra.
It said Malaysians in the areas are urged to stay vigilant and follow latest updates and guidance provided by local authorities.
“As of 10am today, no Malaysians have reportedly been affected by the earthquake.
“The Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre in Taipei is actively coordinating efforts with local authorities to obtain further information,” it said in a brief statement.

Wisma Putra also said that Malaysia extends its deepest sympathies to the victims and families affected by the earthquake.
At least sevel people are dead andmore than 700 injured from a 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the east coast of Taiwan at 7.58am (local time, similar to Malaysian time) today.
According to the Central Weather Bureau, the quake’s epicentre was in waters about 25km south of the eastern county of Hualien and 138km from Taipei.
The shock was felt across the island, causing buildings to collapse.
Tsunami warnings have been issued on the island as well as on mainland China and elsewhere in the region.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department, in a statement, said the earthquake did not present any tsunami threats to Malaysia. – April 3, 2024
