Former law minister questions authorities' lack of response to Umno Youth chief's post featuring sword, defiant caption

KUALA LUMPUR –  Former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has criticised the authorities’ decision not to launch an investigation due to the absence of a police report.

This comes after Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that no official complaints had been filed against Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh over a social media post showing him holding a sword, resulting in no investigation.

“There is no report, so there is no probe,” said the IGP.

“Is there such a law? If the country is burning and no one lodges a report, then the police can’t do anything?” Zaid said in a post on X late last night.

Zaid said that when he was charged with insulting the then-prime minister in 2014, the report was filed by police rather than a member of the public.

“When I was charged with insulting the then-PM in 2014, no public member lodged a report.

“So Bukit Aman got a policeman to lodge the first information report. It’s quite simple,” he said.

Zaid expressed his suspicion that the authorities’ decision not to initiate an investigation was influenced by the involvement of a high-ranking Umno leader, while he said he was a nobody.

Though he did not name anyone in his post, it is believed that he was referring to Akmal.

On March 14, he posted a picture of himself holding a sword with the caption, “No matter what, we will not waver from our stance. Better to die standing than live kneeling.”

Then, on March 17, he publicly called for a boycott of all KK Super Mart stores after socks with the word “Allah” were found in one location. – April 4, 2024
