Late-night accident on NSE kills one person, causes 5-km traffic jam

2:23 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The seven-vehicle accident that resulted in one person’s death on the North-South Expressway last night occurred after the driver of a Honda Accord lost control of the car due to speeding.

Sg Buloh district police chief Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor said a four-wheel drive travelling in the right lane of the expressway southbound near Sg Buloh Hospital could not avoid the Accord and hit three other cars.

Also impacted was a sport utility vehicle that was in the middle lane, which tried to slow down upon seeing other cars losing control, but it was hit from behind by an express bus, Bernama reported Hafiz as saying.

“As a result of the accident, the driver of the four-wheel drive, a 27-year-old man, died at the scene due to serious injuries,” Hafiz said.

The passenger of the four-wheel drive, a Toyota Hilux, was taken to Sg Buloh hospital along with the driver of the Accord, who also sustained serious injuries.

Besides the Hilux and Accord, the accident at KM425.6 of the highway at around 11.30pm yesterday involved an express bus, two Honda HR-Vs and two Perodua Myvis.

The bus had 24 passengers, all of whom plus its two drivers are reported safe.

Other occupants of the remaining vehicles that included one boy were also safe or suffered slight injuries.

Hafiz said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving causing death.

He requested witnesses to assist in the investigation by contacting police’s Che Hassan Ambok at 013-394-0423.

The accident blocked all three lanes of the expressway and caused a 5-km traffic jam, before the scene was cleared at 1.15am.

Yesterday, the first day of the Hari Raya exodus, saw 25 road fatalities and 2,185 accidents reported, police’s traffic enforcement and investigation department said this morning. – April 6, 2024
