Police completing investigation papers on Akmal: IGP

Probe on Umno Youth chief is in relation to statements made on the KK Mart ‘Allah’-printed socks fiasco

2:50 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Investigation papers on Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh are almost complete and will be submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers soon.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed this to Scoop, a day after police in Kota Kinabalu brought Akmal in for questioning, twice in the span of one day.

Razarudin also said the investigation is in relation to the sale of socks with the word “Allah” sold at a KK Mart outlet in Selangor last month.

“We (police) will submit the papers for further action to the Attorney-General’s Chambers,” he said.

Prior to this, Akmal had been leading calls for a boycott of KK Mart stores following the discovery of the offending socks.

He has refused to “stand down” despite being advised to by various quarters and despite an apology by KK Mart, whose founder has since been charged in court for “wounding the religious feelings of others” under the Penal Code.

The Merlimau assemblyman and Melaka exco is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1958 and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Akmal yesterday posted on Facebook about his detention and questioning by police, declaring “No fear, no surrender”.

He had been in Sabah for an Umno Youth programme and was scheduled to arrive back in the peninsula this afternoon.

Earlier today, former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said it was good that police had acted swiftly on Akmal, but urged that the Sedition Act not be used against him. – April 6, 2024
