KUALA LUMPUR – Despite its hefty price tag of RM650 for a single Baklava layer cake, locally known as kek lapis, in Samarahan, Sarawak, this decadent dessert has taken social media by storm, capturing the attention of eager customers.

Sold at Abg K’ju Cake House in Taman Desa Ilmu, Kuching, these viral layer cakes come at an extravagant cost but have quickly become best-sellers among locals in Sarawak.

As per a Facebook post by Abg K’ju, a standard loaf of Baklava layer cake is priced at RM115, while a half cake goes for RM330.

“We’ve restocked our Baklava layer cake. Just the other day, 20 customers splurged on the RM650 cake,” the post read.

Nevertheless, for those on a budget, the pastry house offers smaller portions at RM2.50 per slice, with a limit of five slices per purchase, ensuring that more people can savour this “heavenly” treat.

In addition to Baklava layer cakes, the shop boasts an array of other layer cakes in various flavours.

According to the administrator, the shop will be open until tomorrow afternoon, as the Aidilfitri celebrations begin the following day.

Surprisingly, Abg K’Ju had already shared the layer cake recipe on Facebook, demonstrating a generous spirit.

In the comments, some netizens expressed astonishment at the steep prices, only being able to afford a slice for RM2.50.

Semurni Balqis expressed gratitude to Abg K’Ju for sharing the recipe and offering affordable slices.

“Thank you for sharing the recipe and providing an affordable price for the slice (cakes) , so everyone can have a taste,” she said.

Meanwhile, a netizen named Titi Asmirah defended the RM650 price tag, deeming it justifiable due to the high-quality ingredients used.

“The pistachios that are used in the cake are sprinkled on top of the cake. Additionally, pure butter is used (for the cake), so the price is actually reasonable. – April 8, 2024
