Perak FC sets sights on 40-point surge for Malaysia Super League redemption

Club reinforces squad with three foreign signings to bolster strength amid departures of key players

6:05 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Perak FC has adopted a realistic approach by aiming for a mid-table finish in the upcoming Malaysia Super League season.

The west coast club, affectionately known as Bos Gaurus by fans, has made it clear that their direction for this season will be solely focused on accumulating 40 points from 26 games.

Under the guidance of club legend Yusri Che Lah, the club has made three foreign signings: Luka Milunovic from Serbia, Jesper Nyholm from the Philippines, and Adilet Kanybekov from Kyrgyzstan, to strengthen their team for the new season.

They will be without Nasrol Amri, who left for Kelantan Darul Naim FC, and goalkeeper T. Shaheeswaran, who moved to Negeri Sembilan FC.

Speaking to Scoop, Perak FC’s chief executive officer, Bobie Farid Shamsudin, said that the club’s KPI was set based on its performance in the Super League last season.

The club was relegated from the Super League in 2021, marking the first such occurrence in their history since the league’s establishment in 1982. They made a comeback to the league last season, finishing 11th with 22 points.

“Things were falling apart for us with so many debts to settle while we were making a comeback in the Super League last season. This season, we want to approach everything realistically.

“With the league becoming so competitive in recent times, we are only aiming to get 40 points this season, and that’s going to be the KPI that we will be working around. This is not the old Perak FC that people used to know; hence, we need to be realistic in everything that we do.

“Getting 40 points this season is a big jump from what we had last season (22). We fight based on what we can. If we were fighting for the title, we would be aiming higher.

“But since we just made a comeback to the league after being relegated two seasons ago, our aim for this season is to get back into our groove and ensure we become a club that can finish at a mid-table level in the seasons to come,” said Bobie when contacted.

The Bos Gaurus boast a prestigious history in the local football landscape, having clinched the Super League twice (2002 and 2003), the FA Cup twice (1990 and 2004), and the Malaysia Cup on eight occasions (1926, 1931, 1957, 1967, 1970, 1998, 2000, and 2018).

This season’s Super League campaign is expected to begin on May 10. – April 9, 2024
