Local driver who killed three Pakistani men to face drug charges tomorrow

Authorities say 36-year-old suspect, who tested positive for cannabis, lost control of his car, ploughing into victims on their way to mosque

KUALA LUMPUR – The local driver who killed three Pakistani men as they were walking to perform their morning prayers at a mosque in Teluk Intan yesterday will be charged in court tomorrow under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Hilir Perak district police chief Ahmad Adnan Basri said the 36-year-old suspect, who tested positive for cannabis when arrested, is also being investigated under Section 44(1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving while intoxicated.

“The suspect will be charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (on drug consumption) at the Teluk Intan magistrates’ court tomorrow,” Adnan was quoted as saying by Buletin TV3 today.

“The investigation paper under the Road Transport Act will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor’s office for further action.”

Adnan said in a statement last night that three Pakistani men were killed and three others injured when the Proton Saga driver lost control and ploughed into them in the 8.10am incident.

Investigations at the scene indicated that the driver swerved and skidded to the left shoulder of the road, colliding with six Pakistani men who were walking along the side of the road.

The other three victims were seriously injured and taken to Teluk Intan Hospital for treatment. – April 11, 2024
