KLIA shooting: suspect, wife in divorce process, says Selangor top cop

Datuk Hussein Omar Khan says his spouse previously reported him for threats and he had been detained before

11:21 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The suspect involved in this morning’s shooting incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is currently undergoing divorce proceedings with his wife, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed.

Speaking to Scoop, he also said that police are still tracking down the 38-year-old suspect, who is believed to have fled to the north.

“They are in the process of divorcing, and the police are searching for the suspect believed to have fled to the north of the country.”

“The suspect had past criminal records. His wife had lodged a police report (on the suspect) before this due to threats, and he had been (previously) detained by police,” he told Scoop when contacted today.

Earlier, Hussein said the incident, which occurred around 1.30am, had resulted in one victim sustaining serious injuries.

He said the shooter had targeted his wife, but the bullet had missed and hit a bodyguard instead.

At the time of the incident, he said, the suspect’s wife was believed to be waiting for umrah pilgrims to return.

“The suspect fired two shots at his wife. However, one of the bullets hit a local man who is a bodyguard.”

“After the shooting, the man escaped,” he added.

He also added that the incident was personal and not linked to any terrorist activity.

The motive behind the incident is still under police investigation, and the case is classified as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code and the Firearms Act. – April14, 2024
