IGP confirms intensified efforts to apprehend suspect, Hafizul Harawi, who remains at large

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have distributed photographs of the suspect in yesterday’s shooting at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 to all northern peninsula entry points as well as authorities in a neighbouring country.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain was reported as saying that instructions were issued the moment police identified the suspect involved in the incident, which resulted in a bodyguard suffering serious injuries.

He said that police have also tightened controls on “rat lanes” at the country’s borders to prevent the suspect from fleeing to a neighbouring country.

“Police are now looking for Hafizul Harawi, 38, to assist in their investigation,” he said.

Razarudin also believes that the suspect is still in the country, and efforts to track him down are being intensified.

“I have faith in the efficiency of my personnel. The suspect will be caught soon,” he told Bernama.

Elaborating further, Razarudin said initial investigations indicated that the suspect used a 9mm semi-automatic pistol in the shooting. 

Three bullet casings were recovered from the scene, with one failing to detonate.

“Police retrieved three bullet casings at the scene of the incident, and one of them did not explode. We believe the suspect obtained the pistol from a neighbouring country,” he said.

The incident unfolded around 1.30am when he allegedly discharged two shots at his wife near the airport’s arrival hall entrance, narrowly missing her but striking her bodyguard.

It is suspected that the man acquired the firearm from a neighbouring country. – April 15, 2024
