KLIA shooting: suspect remanded for seven days

Case being investigated as attempted murder under Section 307 of Penal Code, Section 8 of Firearms Act 1971

KUALA LUMPUR – The suspect, who targeted his estranged wife in a shooting at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Sunday, has been remanded for seven days.

The Kota Bharu magistrates’ court has issued the remand order for Hafizul Harawi, 38, starting today, to assist in investigations under Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1971 (Heavier Penalties) for unlawful possession of firearms.

The remand order was issued by magistrate Rais Imran Hamid.

Hafizul had earlier arrived at the courthouse at 8.30am with tight police protection.

He was arrested in front of a private hospital by the Serious Crimes Investigations Department (D9) of the Kelantan police contingent at 3pm yesterday.

His arrest was confirmed by Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

Hafizul is expected to be brought back to Kuala Lumpur today for further investigation and will arrive at the Air Operation Force Base in Subang at 2pm.

Federal police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain is expected to be present.

Earlier, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that the police had recorded statements from 11 witnesses, including victims injured by gunfire and firecrackers, as well as security guards and doctors, to assist in the investigation of the shooting.

He said that several more witnesses, including the suspect’s family members and others, will be called in for questioning.

It was reported that a murder attempt at KLIA left a bodyguard severely injured.

Hussein previously said in a statement that a shooting occurred at around 1.30am in the arrival hall.

Hafizul fired two shots, one of which hit the victim, a personal bodyguard.

He then fled the scene. Follow-up investigations showed that he had intended to shoot his wife, who was waiting for the arrival of an umrah group.

The case is being investigated as attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1971.

The bodyguard is reported to be in stable condition at the hospital. – April 16, 2024
