MAHB and police will meet to discuss measures to enhance airport security

PUTRAJAYA – Airport security is not solely the responsibility of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), as it also falls under the jurisdiction of other security forces, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said today. 

Loke also reiterated that MAHB will convene a meeting with police to discuss measures to enhance security at airports, following Sunday’s shooting incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

“It must be clear that the issue of security is not just under MAHB’s purview.

“They have the responsibility to provide aviation security, but within the airport’s vicinity – especially where the incident happened, where members of the public have access – those areas are under the purview of security forces, especially the police,” he told a press conference at his ministry today. 

Loke also said that the Home Ministry has deployed the General Operations Force (PGA) to patrol areas in the airport, although he could not confirm if this would be a permanent arrangement.

The shooting at KLIA last Sunday resulted in 38-year-old bodyguard Muhammad Nur Hadith Zaini being shot while on duty.

The shooting was reportedly carried out by Hafizul Harawi, who allegedly fired a gun twice, aimed at his estranged wife, Farah Md Isa.

The police believe that Hafizul had personal issues with Farah before the attack.

Currently, he is under a seven-day police remand until Monday and is currently looking for defence lawyers.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Nur Hadith had a successful surgery today, but remains unconscious in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Cyberjaya Hospital. 

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for illegal possession of guns. – April 17, 2024
