KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded the statements of three social media influencers in response to complaints about content they had uploaded.

Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Chegubard, and Salim Iskandar had their statements recorded at the MCMC headquarters in Cyberjaya.

Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, also known as Papagomo, had his statement recorded at the Setapak police station, the MCMC said in a statement.

Mobile phones used to upload the content under investigation were also seized from the trio.

They are being investigated regarding social media content that allegedly violates Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 on using network facilities to post content deemed offensive or annoying to another person.

They face a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year, or both, if convicted.

On Tuesday, the MCMC announced the three would be summoned for questioning following complaints about their posts.

In the case of Chegubard, police have opened an investigation paper against the Bersatu member for allegedly making seditious remarks regarding a Mercedes-Benz gifted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said a similar investigation had also been initiated into Muhammad Zahid Md Arip, who is Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s former political secretary.

The investigations are under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948. – April 18, 2024
