No truth to MoU terms on compulsory support for PM, says Anwar

Constituency allocations for opposition lawmakers are meant to ensure the stability of the government

3:19 PM MYT

KAJANG – There are no “support PM” terms in the government’s memorandum of understanding (MoU) on constituency allocations for opposition lawmakers, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

It is more of a discussion between the parties involved to ensure the stability of the government, he added.

“We have given the mandate to (Deputy Prime Minister) Fadillah. There are no conditions in the MoU that MPs must support the prime minister as alleged by the opposition.

“(It’s) a discussion so the government remains stable and we can focus on economic growth, which will guarantee peace and stability. Details are up for discussion,” he said after Friday prayers here today.

Yesterday, DAP’s Nga Kor Ming said the constituency allocations for opposition MPs would be conditional as per the agreement reached at the unity government leadership council meeting at Seri Perdana in Putrajaya on Wednesday.

However, Nga said the conditions were not discussed during the meeting.

Previously, Fadillah said Putrajaya would draft an MoU and extend it to the opposition for further discussions.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin welcomed the government’s decision to allocate funds to MPs across the divide, but said the bloc would reserve its decision until it had seen the draft.

The meeting followed a discussion between Fadillah and Hamzah in Parliament on March 19.

Last year, PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man reportedly said three Perikatan Nasional lawmakers were appointed to negotiate with Fadillah.

They are Hamzah, who is also Larut MP, Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and Putrajaya MP Datuk Radzi Jidin. – April 19, 2024
