Claims of inadequate treatment for Tze Yong unfounded: NSI

Institute CEO says MRI scan shows connection with previous back injury and will undergo another surgey to address symptoms

3:38 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The National Sports Institute (NSI) has refuted claims suggesting inadequate treatment for Ng Tze Yong, who has been diagnosed with a rare post-surgery condition related to his back injury.

NSI chief executive officer Ahmad Faedzal Md Ramli reiterated their commitment to prioritising the recovery of the national men’s singles player.

He disclosed that the MRI scan Tze Yong underwent last Tuesday indicates a connection to his previous back injury.

Consequently, the Commonwealth Games silver medalist will undergo another surgery to address his symptoms and continue his rehabilitation process.

Unfortunately, Tze Yong, ranked 18th in the world, had to withdraw from the national squad for the upcoming Thomas Cup in Chengdu on April 28 due to his injury.

Faedzal also clarified that the player has been under thorough observation by NSI doctors and emphasised that claims of inadequate treatment are unfounded.

“Our NSI doctors conduct comprehensive assessments and consultations with specialists to closely monitor Tze Yong’s condition.

“We are meticulous in our approach to ensure the longevity of his career. Therefore, we exercise caution in his treatment, considering various factors including sports science and nutrition.

“Given his priority status, Tze Yong regularly receives treatment at NSI,” said Faedzal.

He also assured that NSI keeps the Badminton Association of Malaysia updated on Tze Yong’s condition.

Tze Yong sustained his back injury during the 2024 Asia Team Badminton Championships in Shah Alam, Selangor, in February.

As a result, the 23-year-old player had to withdraw from competing in the 2024 Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China.

Unfortunately, this withdrawal also dashed his hopes of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. – April 19, 2024
