Syamer Kutty eyes Harimau Malaya resurgence through Penang City FC

Midfielder acknowledges need to regain his form, catch attention of national head coach Kim Pan-gon

4:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Syamer Kutty Abba openly admits that his recent move to Penang City FC is to increase his playing time for Harimau Malaya under the guidance of national head coach Kim Pan-gon.

The 26-year-old Syamer, who began his career with the Black Panthers in 2013, returned to the northeast side on loan after making 43 appearances for Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) since his debut in 2018.

Known for his midfield versatility, Syamer has won 14 accolades with JDT and has made 74 appearances across all levels (under-17, under-20, under-23, and senior) of the national team.

Speaking to Scoop, Syamer said that he hopes to regain his form and impress the national team’s gaffer through his performances for the Black Panthers in this season’s Malaysia Super League.

“I moved to Penang FC for myself after spending my career at the best club in Malaysia, which is JDT. But to be frank, I want to be regularly called up to the national team and I need more game time to be in  Pan-gon’s radar.

“I have not been at my best in the last few games for the national team, and I hope that I can get back to my game and be listed in every call-up.

“I have been under him for quite some time, and he’s someone who is passionate, detailed, and also very demanding. But above all, he’s a good person who can manage the team well, and I respect him a lot.

“I hope I can deliver and achieve more for the national team under his guidance in the years to come,” said Syamer when contacted.

Syamer last played for Harimau Malaya as a substitute in their 2-0 defeat to Oman in the 2026 World Cup/2027 Asian Cup qualifier held at the Bukit National Stadium on March 28.

Malaysia currently sits third in Group D of the 2026 World Cup/2027 Asian Cup qualifier, with six points. – April 30, 2024
