FT minister says uprooted tree in privately owned area

7:52 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The massive 30-year-old tree that fell along Jalan Sultan Ismail, killing one person and injuring another, belongs to Menara IMC, and not Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) here.

As the relevant agencies are cleaning up debris, the affected stretch is closed to the public for now.

“The tree is in a privately owned area and is maintained by the owner, which is Menara IMC.

“I have instructed DBKL to go through the SOP for tree monitoring as 18% of trees over 30-years-old need to be removed for safety reasons,” said Federal Territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa in a statement.

Zaliha and mayor Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh are surveying the affected area.

Some 30 DBKL officers are on scene to help clear the road of tree branches and leaves. They will also be removing the roof structure and street light that were destroyed later tonight.

DBKL is assisted by the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence, police and the Health Ministry.

At least one person died and another was injured after a massive tree fell along Jalan Sultan Ismail here, near the Shangri-La hotel.

The Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department’s assistant operations director M. Fatta M. Amin added that 17 vehicles were also damaged in the incident.

The fallen tree also destroyed a bus stop and debris was also on the monorail track.

Rail operator Rapid KL said there would be service delays between the Bukit Nanas and Raja Chulan monorail stations. – May 7, 2024
