Syed Saddiq requests temporary passport release for S’pore wedding, working trip to Taiwan

Former Muda president previously had his passport released for a conference in Indonesia last September

KUALA LUMPUR – Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has applied to have his international passport released temporarily to attend a wedding in Singapore and a working visit to Taiwan.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin confirmed to Scoop that the court proceeding to hear Syed Saddiq’s application is fixed on May 15.

Currently, his passport is being held by the Kuala Lumpur High Court pending his appeal at the appellate court.

The high court temporarily returned his passport last September to attend a youth leadership conference in Indonesia.

Court documents showed that Syed Saddiq filed the application on May 8, where he said he requires his passport to travel to Singapore for a wedding on May 18, as well as for a work-visit to Taiwan between June 10 and 15.

In his application, he proposed for the passport to be given back to him temporarily until June 18 as that would give him ample time to return his passport once he is back in the country.

On November 9 last year, Syed Saddiq, who is also former youth and sports minister and former Muda president, was sentenced to seven years in jail, and fined RM10 million and two strokes of the rotan by the high court after being found guilty of four charges.

The high court had allowed Syed Saddiq’s application to stay the execution of all sentences pending appeal. – May 10, 2024
