KUALA LUMPUR – For a 26-year-old Grab e-hailing driver who found himself the victim of a freak accident involving a fallen tree earlier this month, the protection and benefits offered by the Social Security Organisation (Socso) could not be more of a blessing.

Grab’s aid in assisting Abdul Hayyi Al Hakimi Nazli has also played a crucial role in helping the driver and his family manage the fallout from the incident.

Speaking to Scoop, Hayyi, who suffered injuries to his head, chest and arms after a tree fell on his car along Jalan Sultan Ismail during a thunderstorm on May 7, expressed his gratitude over the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SPS) and Grab’s SPS Contribution Matching (SPS Gig 4.0) initiative.

Noting that Grab representatives had come over to his home on May 11 to assist him in filling out paperwork for his Socso coverage claims, Hayyi said he is thankful for the benefits provided under SPS and Grab’s insurance scheme.

“Alhamdulillah, I will be getting my Socso benefits once I’ve filled in the necessary documents as part of the claims process,” said Abdul Hayyi, who has been a Grab partner for about four years now.

“I’m relieved that I’ll be receiving some sort of assistance (as) Grab’s insurance and my Socso coverage will contribute to relieving my medical costs.”

He also said the financial aid means a great deal to him as he had just recently tied the knot on April 12, less than a month before the tree-falling incident which caused the death of one person, injuries to several others and extensive damage to numerous vehicles.

One of those hurt during the accident was Hayyi’s passenger, a 72-year-old Swedish woman who subsequently received treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital for the injuries she sustained.

Thanks to his status as a Socso contributor, Hayyi is eligible to claim SPS’ temporary disability benefits of RM41.33 per day as well as medical and rehabilitation treatment benefits.

According to an explainer published by Grab on its website, its SPS Gig 4.0 initiative enables self-employed Grab partners to receive insurance protection under the SPS programme.

The initiative, which aims to provide comprehensive protection for individuals in the event of a self-employment injury during work-related activities, is a subsidy where Grab partners will only have to pay 10% (RM23.20) from a contribution rate of RM232.80 under Contribution Plan 2.

Meanwhile, Grab provides a daily e-hailing insurance as a renewable coverage plan which provides around-the-clock protection to all its partners whenever they are online. – May 18, 2024
