Jemaah Islamiyah is under control in Malaysia: Saifuddin

Home minister says there is sufficient information on the group’s members and movements in the country for police to manage

11:50 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) movement in the country is under control, assured Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution.

With a sufficient database on JI members and their movements in the country, police are well-prepared to manage cases such as yesterday’s attack at the Ulu Tiram police station, he added.

“We have sufficient databases to handle such incidents and we have the background of those who are involved in any activity or have been detained under (the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

“The police will continue to interact with them to ensure that the rehabilitation process continues, thereby minimising any potential threat to the community.”

“Alhamdulillah, this JI (movement) is still under control and I believe the police have the experience to manage (a similar incident at the Ulu Tiram police station) based on the database and patterns of the incidents,” he said.

He was speaking at a press conference at the Johor contingent police headquarters, here today. Also present was Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

Yesterday, the nation was rocked by an attack on the Ulu Tiram police station, which left two policemen killed and another injured.

The assailant, who was shot dead at the scene in a shootout with police, was a confirmed member of the JI group.

His 62-year-old father was also a JI member, the police revealed.

Along with his father, the police also arrested the suspect’s mother and three siblings to assist in the investigation.

They are currently in police custody pending further investigation, following the issuance of a remand order extending to May 24.

Meanwhile, Saifuddin urged the public to refrain from speculating, while the media was advised to report the incident based on the facts provided by the police.

“I was able to detect some (inaccurate) reports by the media, and I request that the media write based on the facts of the case without linking this to any religion.

“Give the police space to conduct investigations, and we assure you that public order and safety are our priorities,” he said.

In the 2.45am attack yesterday, three people were killed: two policemen, constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and constable Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24, as well as the 21-year-old suspect.

Another policeman, Corporal Mohd Hasif Roslan, was injured in the incident. – May 18, 2024
