Labuan MP confirms receipt of letter via email and WhatsApp, emphasising his sacking as reason for not responding

KUALA LUMPUR – Similar to the decision made by Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman said that he too will not respond to the letter of notice issued to him by the Bersatu leadership. 

He said that he is also keen to see what actions the party will take against those who fail to respond after the 14-day period elapses.

“We want to wait for their actions (after 14 days), and if there is a by-election, then I will contest. 

“There’s no reason for me to reply to the letter because I have been fired. So why would I reply,” he told Scoop today.

He also confirmed that he received the letter via email and WhatsApp two days ago.

Yesterday, Syed Hussin said that he would not respond to the letter and added that it serves no purpose.

Meanwhile, Selat Kelang assemblyman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari said that he has yet to receive the letter as of yesterday.

Last Friday, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the party had sent letters containing written instructions from the party’s supreme leadership council to seven members who had declared their support for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Apart from Suhaili and Syed Hussin, the other members who pledged their support for the unity government are Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tg Karang).

Meanwhile, the Selat Kelang assemblyman has also expressed his support for Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari’s leadership.

Hamzah said that if these members failed to respond within 14 days, their party membership would cease immediately, in accordance with Clause 10(4) of the Bersatu constitution.

In the meantime, Suhaili also shared the aforementioned letter of instruction with Scoop. 

Among its contents is the requirement that they express their undivided loyalty to the party and retract their support for the prime minister.

They were also asked to write a letter to the Dewan Rakyat speaker, requesting that their seat position be changed and that they rejoin the opposition bloc.

All the MPs involved must also sign a letter of commitment, or bai’ah, as instructed by Bersatu’s Supreme Leadership Council, ensuring that they will not support the unity government and only support candidates determined by the party’s supreme council. – May 19, 2024
