Random or planned? Police probing for links in recent attacks, says Saifuddin

This amid security incidents involving police stations, Istana Negara, death threat to MP

KUALA LUMPUR – Police are investigating for links between security incidents over the last few days involving police stations, a trespass attempt on Istana Negara and a death threat to an MP, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said.

Police are probing into whether these incidents were random or coordinated attempts to attack important institutions in the country, Bernama reported him saying after an event in Putrajaya today.

“It is crucial for the police investigation to determine (whether the attacks) are random acts or part of a coordinated plan and (if they are) carried out by individuals or groups,” he told the media conference after launching the new Film Censorship Guidelines.

On Friday, a lone assailant killed two police officers and injured another at the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor, before being shot dead by the injured officer.

On the same day in Kuala Lumpur, two men with a parang in their car were arrested after attempting to trespass into Istana Negara.

Yesterday, a man, believed to be drunk, was arrested for trying to seize a weapon from a sentry at the Dato Keramat police station in George Town, Penang.

Also yesterday, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok lodged a police report after receiving two bullets with a death threat in her mailbox.

Saifuddin said the public should not speculate over these attacks and assured that police were ensuring the highest level of security following these incidents.

“Our investigations are directed towards determining the plot, purpose and motives of the groups or individuals or if they were self-made decisions or planned… let us establish that,” he said.

“We also monitor unfounded views because it is happening in certain media. (Actions) causing anger and division will only hinder the investigation process and bring unnecessary disruptions.

“Police and the Home Ministry take a serious view of this and will not hesitate to take action,” he said.

Saifuddin added he would be briefing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today on the latest developments in police investigations into the incidents. – May 20, 2024
