PUTRAJAYA – The Youth and Sports Ministry is set to conduct engagement sessions with stakeholders to assess the financial impact of organising the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia. 

Minister Hannah Yeoh announced that these sessions will also gauge the interest of other states in co-hosting the event with Putrajaya, Bernama reported. 

The first engagement session is scheduled for June 6.  

“From the engagement session with all potential sponsors, I will bring the feedback to the cabinet before a decision is made,” she said when attending today’s Sports Satellite Account launching ceremony at Menara KBS. 

Hannah estimated the cost of organising the games to exceed RM700 million. 

“This estimate is based on the expenses of the 2017 SEA Games. However, given that it is now 2024, the cost may increase. This is why we need to hold engagement sessions to hear from all parties,” she added. 

Currently, the sports minister said only Sarawak has expressed interest in hosting the Games. 

However, she emphasised the importance of fairness to other states by presenting and discussing the opportunity with them before making a final decision. 

In May 2022, the SEA Games Federation Council Members Meeting unanimously granted Malaysia the right to host the 2027 SEA Games following Brunei’s withdrawal. 

Thailand and Singapore were granted the rights to host the Games in 2025 and 2029, respectively. 

The 2027 SEA Games will mark the seventh time Malaysia hosts the biennial event, having previously done so in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2017. – May 31, 2024
