Incentive for national sepak takraw team paves way for future glory

Malaysia’s roaring success at the recent Sepak Takraw World Cup has brought the sport back to prominence

8:54 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The national sepak takraw team is currently on cloud nine as they are set to receive a huge incentive totalling RM170,000 for their recent success at the 2024 Sepak Takraw World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

The incentive is a landmark moment for sepak takraw, marking the first time such support has been extended outside of successes in the SEA Games or Asian Games.

The team will be receiving this special incentive from the National Sports Council (NSC), a significant recognition for their hard work and triumph.

Speaking to Scoop, Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) president, Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan, emphasised the importance of this incentive.

“Players must be grateful as this is a great start. Sepak takraw has never received an incentive like this before, and it will serve as inspiration and motivation for other players competing in major international tournaments,” he said

Last month, the national squad made history by ending Thailand’s long-standing domination, securing victories in the finals of the inter-regu and doubles events for the first time.

The team’s victory was not just a win on the court as it also signifies a potential resurgence of sepak takraw in Malaysia.

Sumali highlighted the growing phenomenon surrounding sepak takraw, stating that there is a new excitement about the sport at the moment.

“Our World Cup success has drawn incredible attention, with a record number of spectators and millions tuning in online.

“This marks a new era for sepak takraw, with fans eager for its revival,” he said.

Looking ahead, Sumali revealed ambitious plans for the sport as there are plans to organise international tournaments annually.

“Apart from the World Cup, I plan to organise an international tournament in Malaysia every year.

“This will allow more players to compete on home ground and let local fans see their national athletes in action,” he said.

While the incentive is a promising start, the future of sepak takraw in Malaysia hinges on sustained support and development.

Sumali urged for sepak takraw to be reinstated as a core sport, highlighting the need for government backing to advance their development programs.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh suggested that PSM collaborate with higher education institutions for training facilities until dedicated infrastructure can be built and that discussions are ongoing regarding reintroducing sepak takraw as a core sport. – June 4, 2024
